Abstract

Staff development is essential to quality assurance. This chapter discusses staff development as a prerequisite for academic quality in the context of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, and in addition considers the intrinsic value of staff development to enable improvements in the quality of education, and multiple other benefits to individuals and to institutions. It considers models and options of staff development in higher education, including postgraduate certificates in learning and teaching, and makes recommendations for effective approaches that support institutional goals and long-term success.
