Abstract

Sustainable tourism is a concept that emphasizes the need to balance economic viability, environmental preservation, and social responsibility. It has gained notable attention in recent decades largely due to the growth of tourism and its associated negative implications to environment and society. Contextualized within the broader framework of sustainability and sustainable development, sustainable tourism is often highlighted as a transformative tool, aiming to shift tourism from a potential agent of depletion to a catalyst for positive change. This entry delves into the relationship between tourism development and sustainability, discussing challenges and barriers hindering the transition to sustainable development. Further, it also discusses the growing concerns related to sustainability and tourism, the relationship between tourism and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while emphasizing the need for cooperation, coordination, and a more holistic approach to address the socio-economic and environmental concerns related to sustainable tourism.
