Abstract

Interest in the variability of weather and climate in Spain, and to a lesser extent Portugal, is a consequence of notable aspects such as the broad range of climatic types on the peninsula (from wet humid to semi-arid), the extremes of
temperature, and the frequent incidence of very high-intensity seasonal rainfall. These are not only important from a climatological point of view but also have considerable impact on human activity. An excellent summary of the main features of Spanish climate by Wheeler (1996) is recommended.
