Abstract

Herders-farmers conflict is an age-old phenomenon associated with interaction between sedentary farmers and Fulani nomadic pastoralists in many African societies. In various parts of Nigeria, the conflict has in recent decades consistently assumed a violent dimension often manifesting in form of frequent attacks on unsuspecting farming communities leading to massive destruction of lives, property and the displacement of persons. In the North-Central geo-political zone of the country particularly, many communities are currently trapped in a recurring cycle of violence between nomadic livestock herders and farming communities which has long elevated the situation to the stage of a crisis
