Abstract

The JAM Festival, an annual event hosted by a preeminent arts organisation renowned for its innovative and multidisciplinary approach, provided a significant platform for contemporary artistic expression in July 2024. Situated across various churches and secular venues on Romney Marsh in southeast Kent, this festival exemplified the intersection of historical spaces with modern artistic practices. The inclusion of a diverse array of art forms - from visual arts to theatrical performances and musical compositions and performances underscored the festival's commitment to fostering a holistic cultural experience.

Voices in the Mirrors

This series of etchings began with an exploration of the Sound Mirrors at Denge. However, the prints are not intended to represent or mimic these structures. The work explores conversations lost, of people lost, of conversations never begun, of things we wished we’d said. The results are intricate and complex multi-layered prints that resist literal interpretation. The prints are a contemplation of how space and place is explored through memory and loss capturing the ephemeral nature of human interaction and the lingering impact of the unspoken. The iterations of the prints utilise multi-plate etching with white ink printed on top of black, creating a stark and evocative etchings. The prints are contemplative and complex in their making. The employment of white ink on black creates a stark visual contrast that explores a material manifestation of the conceptual contrasts explored in the work - presence and absence, memory and forgetting, speech and silence.

The public were invited to attend a talk on 7th July to introduce the work and discuss the intricacies of multi plate etching and engage with the emotional landscapes of memory, loss, and the spaces in between.
