Beyond the ‘usual suspects’: Exploring the adoption of ‘good practice’ recommendations for closing BAME/GEM attainment and continuation gaps in UK HE

This paper will present preliminary findings from a mixed-methods research project focusing on staff adoption of 'good practice' recommendations for closing BAME/GEM awarding and continuation gaps in UK higher education, as well as barriers and challenges in the take-up of 'good practice' recommendations. The two-part project is taking place at a university in the UK, and involves a survey of all staff, as well as a series of targeted focus groups. In particular, the project's emphasis is on engaging both academic and professional servicesstaff beyond the 'usual suspects' (i.e. staff already interested and invested in inclusive and/or anti-racist pedagogical projects), with significant implications for institutional initiatives aiming to tackle the awarding/continuation gaps.
