Facilitating safe teaching spaces online: Staff and student experiences

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference Presentation

Description

The project is exploring staff and students experiences of ‘safety’ within the classroom environment. To employ a collaborative approach to research, two students researchers are part of a wider research team, exploring what it means to feel ‘safe’ within online spaces-and how educators can develop this sense of safety. The research approach included two phases. The first phase consisted of two semi-structured focus groups exploring how students view safety in the classroom. These focus groups were used to develop vignettes to be provided to the lecturers within phase two. Phase two used two semi-structured focus groups exploring lecturers’ understandings of safety in the classroom. The student vignettes were then used to add an additional layer of depth to further explore this sense of safety. These lived examples will provided a platform for a more detailed discussions surrounding the management of uncomfortable topics, when teaching online.
