Plurilingual communication in healthcare. Interlinguistic and intercultural mediation

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference PresentationResearch

Description

Using a corpus of mediated interactions in Italian medical settings, particular regard is given to the effectiveness of mediation in giving voice to cultural diversity in the interaction. The term Interpreter-mediated interaction is used to refer to triadic interaction involving an interpreter as the third party in a communication process between individuals who do not share a common language.
While most research on mediation analyses triadic exchanges between a doctor, a migrant patient and an interpreter-mediator, in the interactions analysed in this presentation the triadic format alternates with dyadic sequences from which one of the participants is temporally excluded.
Although the positive impact of dyadic sequences for the quality of multilingual communication in healthcare settings is acknowledged, in this presentation argues for the important function of the mediator also in medical encounters where healthcare staff and migrant patients can communicate directly.
