Biography

Alexis Taylor is a Graphic Designer with specialisms in typography, branding and publishing. He has been a lecturer in graphic design since 2001 and has taught at a number FE and HE institutions. 

He is Subject Leader & Head of Department of Art & Design at the University of Northampton, responsible for a range of courses including BSc Architectural Technology, BA Fine Art, BA Fine Art Painting & Drawing, MA Fine Art, BA Graphic Communication, BA Illustration, BA Interior Architecture & Spatial Design, BSc Product Design and BA Visual Communication. 

Alexis Taylor graduated with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design from Cambridge School of Art after which he worked in London in the music and fashion industries, as well as later with clients including The Open University, BBC, the NHS. In 2004 he was a contributor to a publication that won an EMAP award for a self-published magazine, and his work has been featured in Creative Review. He gained his PGCE in 2009 and he has been a Fellow of the HEA since 2016.

 

His experimental personal work has often reflected an obsession with type and letterforms. Specialist interests are in the field of typography and typographic design, in particular the vernacular use of text. Reappraisals of vernacular typography as expressions of regional identities, and the ephemeral idiosyncrasies of speech and language are key areas of interest. He has curated several exhibitions of the Osborne Robinson Poster Collection which totals 20,000 artefacts and remains a key supporter of the archive which is held at The University of Northampton. His practice is currently switching focus to the intersection of graphic communication, architectural space and the transformation bought about by emerging, immersive digital technologies. 

He continues to work as a practising graphic designer, working on commercial projects, interior and exterior design and branding.

Teaching Interests

Alexis currently teaches on BA Graphic Communiication where he is level 6 tutor, and on occasions on BA Interior Architecture and Spatial Design. Alexis has an interest in delivering history and theory of 20th and 21st Century Graphic Design and popular culture a well as typographic design and multi-channel communication work. Alexis is currently developing a new post-graduate programme centered around digital experience design. This is an emerging interest in XR and the benefits across physical and digital domains.
