Biography
James Smith is a graphic designer and typographer working with individuals and organisations across cultural and private sectors. His personal design research has been featured in galleries throughout the UK, Europe, and the United States. In 2022, he founded Counter Foundry, a digital type foundry, where he has developed typefaces for global clients, including Real Madrid CF and Brighton & Hove Albion FC. His approach to type design combines contemporary techniques with historical references, often exploring modularity and OpenType technologies. Influenced by digital culture, his work bridges traditional typographic principles with modern, flexible solutions that respond to diverse digital environments.
Research Interests
Current practice-led research centres on the intersections of contemporary and historical type design, examining how traditional typographic principles can be adapted and reimagined for digital contexts. Alongside commissioned works, James is currently developing a series of parametric and generative typefaces that explore OpenType technologies.
